August School Counseling Report Mrs. Johnson The following report will illustrate the school counseling services provided by Mrs. Johnson for the month of August. All services provided, strive to meet Vineland's students academic, person/social, career exploration needs of all of our dragons. Core Curriculum Classroom Lessons All students in grades 3rd-6th grade met with the school counselor, Mrs. Johnson, during minute meetings. This was designed to be able to get in touch with all students individually to build a bond with each student. This lesson was designed to help with students social and emotional needs. Stats Total number of students reached: 467  Total number of lessons taught: 20  Total number of time conduction lessons: 10 Hours Small Group Counseling Small groups and school counseling program will be offered throughout the month of September. The purpose of this school counseling activities is to respond proactively to students needs. Individual Counseling All students are able to meet with the counselor. One of my professional goals isn to meet with each students individually through minute meetings on a quarterly basis. The following stats indicate the students that were met with for individual counseling in August through self, teacher, parent or principal/counselor referral. Stats: Total # of students who accessed individual counseling-41 Total # of time conducted individual counseling: 13 hours Reasons for referral: conflict/ fighting with peers or family member, building coping skills, feeling of sadness. October- The character word for October  will be respect. In October, students in 2nd grade, will be discussing the characteristics of Respect. We will be reading The Day the Crayon Box Quit. We will then discuss how we all have different qualities that make us a great person and we need to try and realize others qualities.  We will talk about how we need to respect that we are all different. We will also be playing a respect game in the class about what is respectful and what disrespect looks like.     In grades 3-6, we will be discussing Harassment and how we need to respect others for who they are. We will be discussing how things we say make others feel. We will be playing a scoot game on what  harassment and what kids being mean looks like.     Please take some time to discuss harassment and how we need to respect others these things with your students to help reinforce the lessons.

September- The character word this month is Responsibility. During guidance for the month of September, we talked about Responsibility. We talked about what responsibility looks like in the classroom, home and throughout our everyday lives.   In 2nd grade we read the story The Paperboy. We discussed how the paperboy displayed the characteristic of being responsibility during his job. We also talked about ways the the school counselor can help the students throughout the day and during the school year.     In grades 3-6, we watched a video of being responsible over the internet and on the computer. Throughout the video we stopped and discussed ages of being on social media, what cyber bullying was and how the counselor or an adult at school can help can help, but mostly importantly how parents can help keep students safe on the internet.  We also did a short worksheet together on safety on the internet. We finished the lesson off with a getting to know you worksheet, so that the counselor was able to get to know one fun fact about each student. Please take a little time to talk with your child about being responsible on the internet and how we are trying to protect them. Talk with your child about how being a responsible citizen can make them a well rounded student.

April- The character word for April will be Self- Discipline/ Self Control. In April, students in K-3, will be discussing careers that they might be interested in. We will be reading When I Grow Up by AL Yankovic. We will be talking about our parents job and what we want to be when we grow up and what types of schooling we will have to go to. .     In grades 4-5 , we will be talking about test taking strategies and how to be prepared for our test that we will be taking throughout the month. We will also be talking about ways to resist peer pressure and controlling our own behaviors and not following the rest of our friends.       6th grade will have the opportunity to talk with the junior high counselor, Angie Turner, we will be talking about what to expect at the Junior High and getting our schedules prepared for the next year. Please take some time to discuss these things with your students to help reinforce the lessons.

March- Fairness March - The character word this month is Fairness. During guidance for the month of March, we will be talking about what fairness. In grades K-3, we will be reading the book The Rainbow Fish. We will be talking about how things might not seem fair but once you understand why one person gets something that helps them succeed in school, it turn out to be a fair thing. In grades 3-6, students will be attending a career fair on March 18th, during their specials times. We will have many volunteers from local business to come and talk to us about their career and get our students thinking about careers that they might be interested in. PARENTS: Please let Mrs. Johnson know if you would like to volunteer to come and speak to our students about what you do as a career by March 14. Please take a little time to talk to your child about being fair and discuss ways that being fair can also build their character to make them a more well rounded student.

January Character Word- HONESTY January- The character word this month is Honesty. During guidance for the month of January we will be talking about what it means to be honest. Honesty can be a tough character trait to fulfill. In grades K-3 we will be reading the book The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs- written from the Wolf's point of view. We will be talking about how once the wolf told one lie he had to tell another and another to cover up the first lie that he told. The class will be discussing how hard it is at times to tell the truth, but with the truth also comes respect. We talk about earning respect because it is tough to tell the truth, but adults respect us for being honest and telling the truth. In grades 4-6 we will be talking about how honesty and peer pressure go hand in hand. We will also be talking about tricks to help us deal with peer pressure when we come face to face with pressure. Classes will also be discussing taking the Great Kindness challenge, which they are challenged to do 5 things or more for someone. Please take a little time to talk to your child about being honesty and discuss ways that being honest can also build their character and make them a more well rounded student

NOVEMBER - The character word this month is CITIZENSHIP. During guidance for the month of November we will be talking about what it means to be a good citizen and how we can be good citizens. In grades K-3 we will be reading the book What if Everybody Did That and discussing how we can be a good citizen in different settings including in school and out in the public. In grades 4-6 we will be talking about people in the past and present and what made them good citizens. We will also be talking about how we can be good citizens and good role models in our building. Please take a little time to talk to your child about citizenship and discuss ways they can be a good citizen.

Our character word for the month of October is RESPECT. In grades K-3 We have been talking about how each person is different. Each student has different qualities that are beneficial to being a good person. We have been discussing how we need to respect other peoples qualities. In the Kindergarten classes we have been reading the book Elmer. Then coloring a sheet explaining why we are one of a kind. In grades 1st -3rd we have been reading the book The Invisible Boy. We then discussed as a group what makes us one of a kind. We have decided that the easiest way to show respect in the classroom is by using classroom manners and raising our hands and also keeping our hands to ourselves. Each class decided that there is no reason that we should be touching others for any reason. In grade 4-6 We have been discussing gender and sexual harassment. Gender/Sexual harassment is: unwelcome physical or verbal things done because someone is a boy or a girl that makes that person feel uncomfortable. We took a quiz together and talked about harassment. Please talk with your child about gender/sexual harassment. At home to try: Please talk with your child at home about ways that they can show respect at school, at home, and out in the community. Please check out our bulletin board on Respect:

The character word for the month is RESPONSIBILITY. Please talk with your child about their lesson that they have had with Mrs. Johnson and Mrs. Lewis during guidance. In grade K-2 we have been reading the book Mean Jean the Recess Queen. We have also discussed how the counselors can help each student succeed. In grades 3-6 we have been talking about Internet safety and being a good Digital Citizen. We have been talking about how the counselor can help. Also we will be starting groups here in October. Please talk with your child about ways to be responsible at home, school and out in public.   Below is our latest bulletin board outside the counselor’s office.
